A story better illustrates our thinking. This story is attributed to the Apollo 13 mission, where a lunar landing turned into a desperate race against time.
When an oxygen tank exploded 200,000 miles from Earth, the crew was trapped in a failing vessel. In-house life support systems were failing as carbon dioxide climbed to lethal levels. The square filters from the command module simply wouldn’t fit the round holes of the lunar module.
NASA engineers in Houston were called in to solve the impossible. They gathered every resource available to the astronauts – plastic bags, cardboard, and duct tape – to find a way. They recreated the scene on the ground, working only with what the crew had on board.
After hours of intense trial and error, they engineered a makeshift adapter. They radioed the instructions up, and the system roared back to life. The mission was saved not by new parts, but by ingenious thinking when having limited resources.
Not too many people remember who solved the problem, but they remember the astronauts.
